Dattel, f., ‘date’ (fruit), from MidHG. datel, tatel, tatele, f.; from Rom., — Fr. datte, Ital. dattilo; the primary source of which is Gr. δάκτυλος, ‘date’ (comp. Attich).; hence too Du. dadel, E. date.
