Schwiele, f., ‘hard skin, weal,’ from the equiv. MidHG. swil, m. and n., OHG. swilo, m., swil, n.; Teut. *swiliz, pre-Teut. *swelos, n., is to be assumed; allied to the root swel in schwellen, Schwulst. Schwiele, lit. ‘swelling.’
