The Angelus or Angelus Domini (The Angel of the Lord) originated with the 11th-century monastic custom of reciting three Hail Marys during the evening, or Compline, bell. The current form of the Angelus prayer is first recorded in a Venetian Catechism from 1560. Traditionally it is said three times a day: at sunrise, noon, and sunset. During Easter season, it is replaced with the Regina coeli.
