British priest and a teacher, a scholar of Hebrew and Syriac, in 1881, upon the recommendation of James Legge, he became the headmaster of Queen's College in Hong Kong, where his Chinese name and title was 胡礼博士. He retired in 1909. Apart from 2 books of Biblical studies he wrote several exercise-books for use at his school and worked towards a Chinese-English/English-Chinese Dictionary (together with Thomas Kirkman Dealy who became the next schoolmaster). One of the students during his time at Queen's College was Sun Yat-sen.
