Frederick was born in Wolverhampton in 1883, the son of Frederick Theobald and Eleanor M. Langley. In 1901, he was a boarder at “The Hall”, Uppingham School House, Rutland. By 1911, he was with his parents at Claregate, Tettenhall, and sisters Winifred Olive Langley and Eleanor Gwladys Layton. Frederick was a barrister. In 1912, he married Muriel Janet Lewis in Wolverhampton. The couple had four children – James Maydon (1916), Dorothy M. (1917), Barbara H. M. (1917) and Ralph G. (1919).

Frederick enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment, becoming Lieutenant, Captain and Major. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1916 as part of the King’s Birthday Honour. On 4 January 1917, the Express & Star announced that his name “appears in the Intelligence Corps’ list”. The same article also notes that his brother-in-law, husband of Eleanor Gwladys, Geoffrey Layton , had also been promoted in the Royal Navy Frederick survived the war, and died on 22 January 1947 in Woodbridge, Suffolk. The value of his effects was £28588 13s.
