Objection to the Image purporting to represent Patanjali

[edit]

Nowhere in the Yoga Sutras is "Kundalini" mentioned, nor is there any mention of "snakes". Perhaps it is alluded to as a "klesha", a knot of affliction, but then the purpose is to liberate onself from it, not to get wrapped up in it. "Asana" and "Pranayama" are treated very briefly, and even the word "Hatha" is not used. The visual depiction of Patanjali as a snake-man contains a parochial and unwarranted interpretation, imported in by later hatha yogis and snake-cults, who appropriated him into their religions, and made him an object of veneration, probably without having ever read his Yoga Sutras.

I move that we remove the image from his Author page.

No image is necessary if you wish to honor Patanjali, simply present one of his notable sayings. For example, "Here is the teaching of Yoga".
