The eldest son, Robinson Thornton, D.D. (b. 1825), warden of Trinity College, Glenalmond, from 1870 to 1873, and Boyle lecturer in 1881–3, became archdeacon of Middlesex in 1893.

Thornton resigned as archdeacon in 1903 according to w:Archdeacon of Middlesex, and was listed "late" in A Dictionary of Hymnology (2nd ed.), 1907, so must have died c. 1905. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 15:34, 8 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
