Published in Otmar's Volcks-Sagen (1800), and reprinted in Büsching's Volks-Sagen, Märchen und Legenden (1812). This story was one of four stories not by the Brothers Grimm included in Edgar Taylor's German Popular Stories (1826), and as a result was also included in some later collections of the Grimms' stories
