CHAVASSE, WILLIAM (1785–1814)
An officer of the E.I. Co.'s service, who tried, with a companion, to explore the route of the 10,000 Greeks, as described in Xenophon's Anabasis. They were taken prisoners by a local chief near Bagdad, but released on payment of ransom. Chavasse died of fever there.
