John Clarke Crosthwaite : born Dec. 25, 1835 : educated at Merchant Taylors' and St. John's College, Oxford : entered the Bengal Civil Service, 1857 : served chiefly m the N.W.P. : Chief Commissioner of British Burma, 1883–4 : Chief Commissioner of Central Provinces, 1885–6 : Chief Commissioner of Burma, 1887–90 : Member of the Governor-General's Supreme Council, 1890–1, and in 1892 : Lieutenant-Governor of N.W.P. and Oudh, 1892–5 : Member of the Council of India, 1895–1905 : author of Notes on the N.W. Provinces of India, 1870 : K.C.S.I., in 1888.
