99.EVENING

Hush, my heart, the sun sinks restward;
  Drowsy cattle seek the town;
From the crimson heath to westward
Solemn storks drop softly nestward—
  Hush, my heart, the sun goes down!

Silence steals across the lea,
  Silence floods the highway; none
But a belated humble-bee,
Murmuring, mars tranquillity—
  Peace, my heart, the day is done!

Lapwings haste in lonely flight
  O'er the wold to seek their nest;
Mid the matted leaves alight;
Fold their pinions for the night—
  Hush, my heart, you, too, shall rest!

Far-off eastward windows blaze,
  Sunlit, into crimson clear;
Moorland tarns in twilight haze
Mirror back the failing rays—
  Peace, my heart, the night is here!

From the Danish of Jeppe Aakjær.
