ONUS HENRICUS, or GOOSEFOOT. Chenopodium. Class 5, Penrandria. Order: Digynia. The French people have given the name of their beloved king, Henry IV., to a beneficent and useful plant, which grows for the poor, and indeed seems exclusively to belong to them. In France it flourishes without any cultivation, and forms the asparagus and spinach of the poor; in England it is known also as wild spinach. The leaves are said to be of great service when applied to wounds. Happy is that king who deserves an homage so universal and so simple!
