Translation

[edit]

The following preface is attached to the 1878 edition of Chapman and Hall, whose translation is identical to the present scan:

The text of the present translation of the Imitation of Christ is the same as that issued by Messrs. Rivingstons in 1876, to whom the thanks of the publishers are due for their permission to make use of it in this edition.

The Imitation of Christ, 1878.

This is the closest I have found to an attribution of the translator. See also w:Rivington (publishers). Note that this is not the translation by John Wesley published by Charles Rivington in 1935. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:11, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Chapter header formatting

[edit]

Use temporary template IOC header to easily format the chapter headers:

## s1 ##
God is different from the judgment of men, and that often offendeth Him which pleaseth them. [...] The humble enjoy continual peace, but in the heart of the proud is envy, and frequent indignation.

## s2 ##
AY not thy heart open to every one, but treat of thy affairs with the wise, and such as fear God.

Drop Initials in image form

[edit]

Chapters begin with text containing fancy drop initials, as in the example found on page 5, which looks like

ALL men naturally ...

and which is coded like this:

LL men naturally ...

Beleg Tâl has created images for the following drop initials seen at start of chapters:

 • A
 • B
 • C
 • F
 • G
 • H
 • I
 • L
 • M
 • N
 • O
 • R
 • S
 • T
 • U
 • V
 • W

On pages where text ends 'early' leaving space at bottom of page, sometimes there is added a decoration:

which can be coded as:

Beleg Tâl has captured other images that may recur in the text:

@Shenme: The drop initials are included in the helper template Template:IOC header, described above. More generally, all images are in Commons:Category:Of the Imitation of Christ (1901). —Beleg Tâl (talk) 12:12, 6 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
