ROUMANIAN GRAMMAR.
Imperfect.
eŭ vedém, ‘I saw.’ | eŭ credém, ‘I believed.’ |
tu vedéĭ, | tu credéĭ, |
el vedea, | el credea, |
noĭ vedém, | noĭ credém, |
voĭ vedéṭĭ, | voĭ credéṭĭ, |
eĭ vedéŭ. | eĭ credéŭ. |
We know that é with the accent is equivalent to the diphthong ea, but as é for ea cannot be written at the end of a word, we have—
el credea (not credé). | el vedea (not vedé). |
Simple Perfect.
eŭ vĕḍuĭ, ‘je vis.’ | eŭ creḍuĭ, |
tu vĕḍuṣĭ, | tu creḍuṣĭ, |
el vĕḍu, | el creḍu, |
noĭ vĕḍurăm, | noĭ creḍurăm, |
voĭ vĕḍurăṭĭ, | voĭ creḍurăṭĭ, |
eĭ vĕḍură. | eĭ creḍură. |
There are many verbs ending in e short which instead of uĭ take eĭ for the simple perfect, and change the last consonant to s; so a merge, ‘to go,’ has not its simple perfect eŭ merguĭ, but—
eŭ merseĭ, ‘I went.’ | noĭ mereserăm, |
tu merseṣĭ, | voĭ merserăṭĭ, |
el merse, | eĭ merseră. |
Thus:
a scrie, | ‘to write;’ | perfect, | eŭ scrisseĭ. |
a duce, | ‘to bring;’ | perfect„ | eŭ dusseĭ. |
