It has recently been discussed so fully and so frequently in daily newspapers and in popular and technical periodicals and books that it need only be mentioned here. That new plant forms may be derived from preëxisting forms by the process of descent with modification has been demonstrated by actua1 experiments, culminating in the classical work of the Dutch botanist, de Vries. The method by which this may be brought about has been outlined by de Vries in his mutation theory. The mechanism of mutation and of inheritance has been worked out in detail by Gregor Mendel and more recent students of genetics, who have extended
