Cf. the introductory phrase of M.'s Introduction to the Moreh: כתב הרב המחבר לתלמידו התלמיד החשוב ר יוסף ש״ץ ב״ר יהודה נ״ע. I. T. translated the Peraḳim in 1202 (see supra, Introduction, p. 10) while M. was yet alive. Therefore, in referring to M., he could not have used the abbreviation ז״ל or זצ״ל. See HUb., p. 438. ש״ץ = שְׁמָרָהוּ צוּרוֹ "may his Rock protect him", preterite for optative; see Munk, Guide, I, p. 3, n. 4; idem, Notice sur Joseph ben-Jehouda, Paris, 1842, p. 69, n. 2. Fürstenthal, Moreh I, p. 2 has, incorrectly, Gemeindevorsänger (= שליח צבור).
