��1 HE diocese of Oxford was taken out of the see of Lin- coln in 1542, and only extended over Oxfordshire, but the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1836am! 1 837 added to it the whole county of Berks, and those parts of the county of Wilts which are insulated therein, forming together the archdeaconry of Berks 1 , in the diocese of Salisbury '; also the whole county of Buck- ingham, forming the archdeaconry of Buckingham, in the diocese of Lincoln ' ; and also the whole parish of Widfordin the archdeaconry of Gloucester, and diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, but insulated in the county of Oxford 1 .
The chapter consists of the dean of Christ Church, the archdeacons of Oxford, Berks, and Buckingham, and eight prebendaries or canons of Christ Church.
Upon the dissolution of the abbey of Osney, king Henry VIII created a bishopric out of its possessions, ami placed the see at Osney, as appears by the letters pa- tent of erection dated 1st Sept. 1542 3 . It was then removed to St. Frideswide's priory church in Oxford, by charter dated 9th June 1545 6 . The charter of endowment of the chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, is dated nth Dec. 1546".
