SALISBURY.
��1 REVIOUS to the alterations effected by the Eccle- siastical Commissioners of Inquiry, appointed in Feb. 1835, the diocese of Salisbury contained the entire county of Wilts, (except the parish of Kingswood, which belonged to Gloucester archdeaconry and dio- cese ; and Whitesbury parish, in the diocese of Win- chester:) it had likewise all Berkshire (txcept Shilton alias Chilton, in Witney deanery, in Oxford diocese; part of Langford parish, with its chapelry of Little Faringdon, belonging to the prebend of Langford, a peculiar to the church of Lincoln ;) and it also had several peculiars in Dorsetshire, reserved to its juris- diction upon the appropriation of that county and archdeaconry to Bristol, when that see was founded in 1542.
There were three archdeaconries in this diocese, viz. Salisbury, Wilts, and Berks.
The members of the cathedral of Salisburv were the dean, the chanter or precentor, the treasurer, the three archdeacons above-mentioned, a subdean, and forty-five prebendaries ; of whom the dean, with six others indifferently chosen out of the dignitaries and prebendaries, were residentiaries or canons major.
By order in council, dated 5th Oct. 1836, the whole county of Berks, and those parts of the county of Wilts which are insulated therein, forming together the archdeaconry of Berks, were dissevered and abso- lutely detached from this diocese, and annexed and united to the diocese of Oxford.
