1142 Joscelim UK Bailul, archdeacon of Winchester, was Stepli. consecrated bishop of Salisbury in 1142 30 . He re- signed his bishopric in 1 184, and assumed the Cister- cian habit 31 ; and ho died 18th Nov. in that year 52 .

189 Hubert Walter was elected bishop of Salisbury at Ric. 1. Pipewell 15th Sept. (xvii Gal. Oct.) 1189, and con- secrated in the chapel of St. Katharine at Westminster (xi Cal. Nov.) 22nd Oct. in the same year 33 . He was translated to Canterbury in 1 J93 ' 194 Herbert, surnamed the Poor, was confirmed on R.I. Whit Sunday (iii Cal. Maii) 29th May j j 94, and consecrated bishop of Salisbury on Trinity Sunday (5th June) in St. Katharine's chapel, Westminster. Ho was enthroned on the 13th of that month 3 '. Ho died in the beginning of May 1217 \ and was buried at Wilton. 1217 Richard, also surnamed the Poor, bishop of Chichester, was translated to Salisbury in 1217. He had a grant of the custody of the bishopric of Salisbury made to him as bishop of Chichester 9th May 1217 37 ; and 27th June following he had a grant of the custody of the see of Chichester made to him as bishop of Salis- bury 39 . He was translated to Durham in 1228 39 . The conge d'elire, vice bishop Richard the Poor, issued 29th July 1228 60 . 228 Robert de Bingham was elected, and obtained the 3en.III. royal assent 25th Sept. 1228 6I . He was consecrated
