dated 28th Feb. 1576-7, was proved 10th April 1 5 7 7 l " l^ 10 license to elect a bishop in the room of Edmund Grheast is not dated ' '. 577 John Piees, bishop of Rochester, was nominated by the Eiiz- Queen to this see 1 ith Oct. 1577, elected by the chap- ter on the [Qtb of the same month, had the royal assent 27th Nov. 14 , was confirmed by the archbishop 2nd Dec. 1 ', and had the temporalities restored 23rd Dec."' The conjre dVlire for the election of a successor to bishop Piers did not issue till 24th Nov. 1591 18 . 591 John Coldwell, M.D., dean of Rochester, elected 2nd ^Elia. Dec. 1 59 1, had the royal assent on the r8th 9 , was con- firmed the 23rd, and consecrated at Lambeth on the 26th of the same month-"; he had the temporalities restored to him 14th Jan. following 21 . He died 14th Oct. 1596, and was buried in Salisbury cathedral, in the same grave where bishop Wyville had been buried long before. The conge d'elirc, after the death of bishop Coldwell. is dated 16th Sept. 1598--. 598 HiAuv Cotton, S.T.P. He was elected 28th Sept., [ Eliz. had the royal assent 16th Oct. 23 , was confirmed nth Nov.. consecrated at Lambeth next day-' 1 , and had the temporalities restored to him 23rd Dec. follow- ing-'. He died 7th May 1615. His will is in the Prerogative Office of Canterbury-"'. 615 Robert Abbot, S.T.P., was elected nth Oct. 1615, Jac. I. confirmed 1st Dec, and consecrated at Lambeth on the 3rd of the same month- 7 . He died 2nd March
