William was the first who enjoyed this preferment, and was instituted by the founder in 1090^7. Ralph, treasurer of York, was present at the consecra- tion of Anselme, archbishop of Canterbury, Prid. Hugh Pltdsey held it in 1141, and from this dignity was made bishop of Durham in 1 153 ^ John succeeded in this dignity in 1154'. In 1163 he was consecrated bishop of l^oictiers •'. Ralph de Waknevilla was so styled in 1 173^. Geoffrey Plant agenet held it in 118 1. Burchard Pudsey had this dignity conferred on him by the King in 1 189". EusTACHius held it in 11 96 and 1 198. Hamo was possessed of it in 1204^. The same person enjoyed it 28th July 1215^ and in 1216. William de Rotherfeld, LL.D., enjoyed it in 1218 and 1221 '^ He died in 1241.
