12 WINCHESTER. ralities were restored to him 11th Aug. 1282[1]. He died 4th Dec. 1304, and was buried in Winchester cathedral[2]. The license to elect a bishop in the room of John do Pontissera is dated 23rd Dec. 1304[3], and
1305 33Edw. I. Henry de Merewell, alias Woodlock, prior of St. Swithin's, Winton, was elected, and the royal assent given to his election 29th Jan. 1304-5[4]. On 10th March Robert, archbishop of Canterbury, informed his Majesty that he had examined[5] into and con- firmed the election of Henry de Merewell as bishop of Winchester[6], and the King thereupon restored the temporalities to him two days afterwards[7]. He was consecrated at Canterbury 30th May and enthroned 10th Oct. He died at Farnham 29th June 1316[8]. The congé d'élire, vice bishop Merewell, is dated 8th July 1316[9], and
1316 10 Edw. II. John de Sandle. dean of St. Pauls and chancellor of England was elected 26th July 1316[10]; he received the royal assent to his election 5th Aug.[11] and the temporalities 23rd Sept.[12] He died at Winchester House in Southwark at the latter end of Oct. 1319[13], and was buried in the church of St. Mary Overy[14].
