Gateshead, in revenge of the murder of Liwiilph, com- mitted by Gilbert, the bishop's relative[1]. To him succeeded
1080 15 Will. 1. William, abbot of St. Carilef, who was nominated by the King 9th Nov. 1080[2], and consecrated at Gloucester 3rd Jan. 1080-81[3]. He died at Windsor 2nd Jan. 1095-6, and was buried in the Chapter-house at Durham[4]
After the death of bishop William, the see of Durham was void upwards of three years,
1099 13 Will. II. Ralph Flambard or Passeflabere, canon of Salisbury and a prebendary of Lincoln was nominated by the King on Whit-Sunday (29th May) 1099[5], and consecrated in St. Paul's cathedral, London, on Trinity Sunday, the 5th of June, in that year[6] He was imprisoned in the Tower T4th Sept. 1100[7];
but he made his escape from thence[8] 4th Feb.
