PROVOSTS. S4B pointed master of King's hall, Cambridge, 2nd Oct. 147712. Roger Lupton, Dec. Dr., was elected 27th Feb. 1503, and confirmed by the bishop of Lincoln 4th March following 13^ He was possessed of it in 153414. Ob. 25th Feb. 1539-40- Robert Aldrich or Aldridge, S.T.P._, was installed provost of Eton 7th May 1534. He was made bishop of Carlisle in 1537 ^^. Godwin says that he was brought up in Eton and King's college in Cambridge. Sir Thomas Smith, knight, LL.D., was elected provost in 15541^. He became dean of Carlisle. Henry Cole, LL.D., and S.T.P., archdeacon of Ely ^ was elected in the same year 155417. He became dean of St. Paul's, London in i^^'S. William Bill, S.T.P., was elected 5th July 1559 1^, and confirmed by the chapter of Canterbury, sede Lin- coln, vacante, 29th July. He died 15th July 1561, being dean of Westminster, and was buried in West- minster Abbey 1^. William Day, S.T.B., chosen by the queen in Dec. 1 56 1, because he was unmarried, and was elected 5th Jan. 1561—220. In 1595 he was made bishop of Win- chester ^^ Sir Henry Savil was elected 3rd June 1596^^. He died 19th Feb. 1621-22, and was buried in the college chapel ^'^ Thomas Murray died possessed of it 9th ^^ April 1623, aetat. 59, and was buried in the college chapel ^^. '2 Pat. 17 Edw.
