Hugh Weston, S.T.P., dean of Westminster^ was re- moved from thence, (to make room once more for an abbot and monks,) and translated to this deanery in 1556 ; and in the next year he was deprived. John Boxoll, S.T.B., was appointed by patent igth March 1557-8, the deanery being vacant (qiiibusdam de causis)'-^ : installed in 1557, elected and sworn re- gistrar of the Garter 6th Feb. the same year. In 1559 he was deprived for refusing to take the oaths. George Carewe was appointed by patent 27th April 1560, on the deprivation of John Boxoll^7j and sworn registrar 22nd April 1560. He resigned in 1572. William Daye, S.T.B., jorows^ of Eton ^ appointed by patent 23rd June 1572^8^ on the resignation of George Carewe: was installed dean 22nd Aug. 1572. He officiated as registrar of the Order without being sworn or admitted, but only by command. In 1595 he was made bishop of Winchester. Robert Bennet, S.T.P.^ was appointed by patent 23rd March 1595—6, on the promotion of William Daye to the see of Winchester ^y, and installed 24th March: he was constituted and sworn registrar of the Order 23rd April 1596, and in 1603 made bishop of Here- ford. Giles Thompson, S.T.P., was appointed by patent 25th Feb. 1602—3, ^" ^^6 promotion of Robert Bennet to the see of Hereford '^^^: installed 2nd March 1602-3. In 161 1 he was made bishop of Gloucester, and ob- tained leave to hold this dignity in commendam for one year.
