laid down for a time. At 6 p.m. I dined with the rector and his family. Got to hall at 7:30 but the exercises did not begin until 8:30. I delivered the commencement address, talking about 45 minutes. Has been a fine day.

Cloudy morning. I arose at 6:45 a.m. to take the morning stage. Hotel bill $4.00. Stage got out of town at 7:40. Cold. Reached change of horses at 11 a.m. and Piceance Creek Piceance Creek, 20 miles from Rifle Rifle, CO, at 1:05 p.m. in rain. Dinner 50¢. Rained more or less at first in afternoon, then frightfully dusty giving me an attack of hay fever. Reached Rifle Rifle, CO at 6:05 too late for Midland train Colorado Midland Railway. Got off on D. & R.G. Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad at 10:05, 35 minutes late. Sprinkling as we left. Supper 50¢. River 90 yds wide at bridge, bed twice as wide. Berth $2.50.
