In 1861 lie became postmaster of Clarinda, Iowa; resigned to serve in the civil war; and attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He then practiced law in Sidney, Iowa; and was district attorney in 1876-80. He was appointed state railroad commissioner in 1881. In 1887-89 he was a representative from Iowa to the fiftieth congress as an independent republican. He died Nov. 17, 1898, in Hot Springs, S.D.
Anderson, Alden, merchant, legislator, lieutenant-governor. He is prominently identified with the business and piiblic affairs of California. He is at the head of the Alden Anderson fruit company of Suisun, Gal.; and identified with various other enterprises. He stands high in legislative affairs; and in 1900 was speaker of the California state legislature. In 1903-07 he was lieutenant-governor of the state of California. Anderson, Alexander, engraver, author, was born April 31, 1775, in New York City. He was the first wood engraver in the United States. He was the author of an illustrated General History of Quadrupeds. He died Jan. 17, 1870, in Jersey City, N.J. He graduated from the university of Minnesota with the degrees of B.S. and M.S. and in 1897 received the degree of Ph.D. from the university of Munich. He is the inventor of new processes of treating cereal grains and starch materials ; and has taken out several patents. Anderson, Alfred Horace, railroad president, was born in 1858 in La Crosse, Wis. Since 1889 he has been president of the Peninsular railroad at Seattle, Wash.
Anderson, Allen Latham, soldier, was born about 1830 in Ohio. In 1854 he was a. cadet in the military academy; and in 1859 attained the rank of second lieutenant in the fifth infantry United States army. In 1861 he was promoted to first lieutenant; in 1862 became captain; and in 1865 was colonel of the eighth regiment California volunteer infantbrevetted major and lieutenantin 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers for faithful and meritorious services during the civil war. Anderson, Alvord Van Patten, soldier, was born in New York. In 1891-96 he served in the United States cavalry, became second lieutenant in the sixth United States cavalry; in 1899 was promoted to first lieutenant,; and in 1901 attained the rank of captain. Tenn. Anderson, Alexander D., soldier, lawyer, founder, author, was born in 1843 in Mansfield, Conn. In 1869 he was assistant to the United States attorney of St. Louis, Mo. He made a special study of Spanish- American subjects; and several of his books were published by the government.
