Hampshire and Hudson River railroad. Anderson, Samuel Jameson, lawyer, railroad president, statesman, was born in December, 1824, in Portland, Maine. In 1856 he was elected attorney for the county of Cumberland; and in 1856-60 was surveyor of the port. In 1860 he was elected president of of the Portland and Ogdensburg railroad. In 1878 he was nominated by the democratic party for congress, but failed of an election. For some years he was major-general of the state militia.

Anderson, Simeon H., lawyer, congressman, was born March 3, 1803, in Gerrard county, Ky. He served frequently in the Kentucky state legislature. In 1839-41 he was representative from Kentucky to the twenty-sixth congress. He died Aug. 11, 1840, near Lancaster, Ky. Anderson, Stonewall, clergyman, educator, college president, was born March 7, 1864, in Phillips county. Ark. He was educated at the Helena district high school; and at Hendrix college. For eight years he was a pastor; for five years he was a presiding elder; and since 1903 has been a member of the educational commission of the methodist

episcopal church south. Since 1902 he has been president of Hendrix college of Conway, Ark. Anderson, Thomas, soldier, clergyman, was born Jan. 1, 1791, in Mercer county. Pa. He graduated in 1830 from Washington college of Pennsylvania. He served as a private soldier during the war of 1813. In 1835-43 he was a home missionary in western Pennsylvania. He died Dec. 30, 1853, in Pennsylvania.

Anderson, Thomas D., clergyman, college president, was born June 30, 1819, in Philadelphia, Pa. From 1843 he filled pastorates in the baptist church; and in 1862-78 was pastor of the First baptist church in New York City, and there built a beautiful edifice. For four years he was president of Rutgers female college of New York City. In 1878 he accepted a pastorate in Boston, Mass. He died about 1885 in Boston, Mass.

He was educated in the public schools of his native state; and at Mount Union college of Ohio. He was a teacher in the public schools of Belmont and Guernsey counties of Ohio for a time; and later became principal of the Cambridge high school. In.X871-S9 he practiced law in Cambridge, Ohiq. In 1889 he was appointed minister resident and United States consulgeneral to Bolivia; and later envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to that country. In 1893 he took up the practice of law in Washington, D.C.; in 18991901 was United States district attorney at

Washington; and since 1901 has been associate justice of the supreme court for the District of Columbia.

Anderson, Thomas Jefferson, soldier, civil engineer, railroad manager, statesman, was born May 39, 1839, in Atwater, Ohio. He moved to Kansas in 1856; in 1861 enlisted as a private in the fifth Kansas cavalry; and was brevetted colonel at the close of the civil war. He has been commander of Lincoln post grand army of the republic at Topeka; and also served as department commander of Kansas. He has been county surveyor; a member of the Kansas house of representatives for two terms ; and served as state senator. He is now assistant general passenger agent of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railway.

Anderson, Thomas L., lawyer congressman, was born Dec. 1, 1808, in Greene county, Ky. He was elected to the state legislature of Missouri in 1840. He was a presidential elector in 1844, 1848, 1852 and 1856; and was a member of the convention for remodeling the state constitution in 1845. In 1857-61 he was a representative from Missouri to the
