schools; and was subsequently admitted to the bar. In 1868-69 he was county superintendent of Ringgold county, Iowa; and in 1870-71 was clerk of the district and circuit courts of that county. In 1876-78 he was a member of the board of supervisors of Buffalo county. Neb.; and in 1887-88 served with distinction as a member of the Nebraska state legislature. For nearly a quarter of a century he was a member of the school board of Kearney, Neb.; and for the past fifteen years has been president of the City national

Andrews, James J., soldier, federal spy, was born about 1829 in Hancock county, Va. As a blockade-runner he was an invaluable aid to the union. He attempted to capture a railway train in the heart of the confederacy, which had he succeeded in accomplishing would have changed the whole aspect of the war in the south and southwest. He however failed and was executed June 7, 1862.
