HBRRINGSHAW'S LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY. Atchinson, David Rice, lawyer, jurist. United States senator, -was bom Aug. 11, 1807, in Frogtown, Ky. He was elected to the state legislature of Missouri in 1834 and 1838. In 1841 he was appointed judge of the Platte county circuit court. In 1841 he was appointed judge of the Platte county circuit court. In 1843-55 he was United States senator from Missouri. He died Jan. 26, 1886, in Clinton county. Mo. Atchinson, Mrs. Rena A. Michaels, educator, author. For several years she was dean of women at the Northwestern university at Evanston, 111.; and for several years was president of the Chicago vegetarian society. In 1893 she married Rev. Wilbur Fisk Atchinson of Chicago, 111. She is the author of Potiphar's House; and other works.

Atherton, Charles Gordon, lawyer, congressman. United States senator, was born July 4, 1804, in Amherst, N.H. He was for many years in the state legislature of

three years was speaker of the house. In 1837-43 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh congresses. In 1843-49 and 1853-55 he was United States senator from Missouri. He died 15, 1853, in Manchester, N.H. Atherton, Charles Humphrey, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 14, 1773, in Amherst, N.H. He held the office of register of probate in 1798-1807. In 1815-17 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the fourteenth congress. He stood at the head of the bar in Hillsboro county for many years. He was a member of the state legislature in 1833; and again in 1838 and 1839. He died Jan. 8, 1853, in Amherst, N.H. Atherton, George W., soldier, educator, college president, was born June 20, 1837, in Boxford, Mass. He was appointed first lieutenant and captain in regiment tenth the Connecticut volunteers

Daughter of the English Husbands; and Vine. Atherton, Gibson, lawyer, congressman, was born Jan. 19, 1831, in Licking county, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney in 185763; was mayor in 1860; and was a delegate to the democratic national convention of 1876. In 1879-83 he was a representative from Ohio to the forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses. Atherton, Humphrey, soldier. He emigrated from England about 1636, settling at Dorchester and was a deputy to the general court. In 1654 he succeeded Robert Sedgwick as commander of the military forces with the title of major-general. He died Sept. 17, 1661, in Boston, Mass. Atherton, Joshua, lawyer, statesman, was born June 20, 1737, in Harvard, Mass. He became a member of the convention appointed to consider the federal constitution; and opposed its adoption on account of the provisions concerning slaves and slavery. Subsequently he ^vp.B elected to the New Hampshire state legislature; and in 1793 was made attorney-general of the state. He was also for a time commissioner for the United States direct tax. He died April 3, 1809, in Amherst, Mass. Atherton, Percy Lee, composer, was born Sept. 35, 1871, in Boston, Mass. He is the author of an opera comique in one act. The Maharaja; a comic opera. Atkins, Edwin F., merchant, millionaire, of Boston, Mass. He is a member of the firm of E. F. Atkins and company, merchants of Boston, Mass.; and a director in various industrial corporations and financial institutions. Atkins, Elias Cornelius, manufacturer, inventor, was bom June 38, 1833, in Bristol, Conn. In 1856 he founded a shop for making saws at Indianapolis, Ind.; and this business grew until he ultimately employed eight hundred men. His trademark was A.A. A.,

which meant Atkins Always Ahead. He

died April 18, 1901, in Indianapolis, Ind. Atkins, Francis Higginson, soldier, physician, army surgeon, author, was born April 15, 1843, in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1863-63 he was a private in the forty-fourth regiment Slassachusetts volunteer infantry; in 186364 was a medical cadet; in 1864 became acting-assistant surgeon in the United States navy; and in 1873-84 was a surgeon in the United States army. In 1885 he began the practice of medicine in Las Vegas, N.M. He is the author of Joseph Atkins; and The Story of a Family. Atkins, Henry, navigator of the eighteenth century, was born about 1690. He
