Since 1896 he has been Sunday school editor of the methodist episcopal church south of Nashville, Tenn. Atkins, John DeWitt Clinton, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was bom June 4, 1835, in
Henry county, Tenn. He was a member
of
the Tennessee state legislature in 1849-53; and was elected to the state senate in 1855. He was chosen a presidential elector in 1856; elected a representative in congress in 1857; and was a presidential elector again in 1860. He was lieutenant-colonel in the fifth Tennessee regiment in the confederate army in 1861; and was elected to the confederate provisional congress in 1861 and re-elected in 1863. In 1857-59 and 1873-83 he was a representative from Tennessee to the thirtyfifth and forty-third to forty-seventh congresses; and in 1885 was appointed commissioner of Indian affairs. He died June 31, 1908, in Paris, Tenn. Atkins, Smith Dykins, soldier, lawyer, journalist, was born June 9, 1835, in Horsehead, N.Y. At the outbreak of the civil war he was prosecuting attorney for Stephenson county. 111. He resigned his ofBce and was the first private soldier to enlist in the county. He raised volunteers for the ninety-second Illinois regiment, of which he was made colonel; and in 1863 he became a brigadiergeneral. Since the civil war he has been editor of the Freeport Journal; was postmaster of Freeport for thirty years; and in 1901 was president of the Illinois state press association.

Wight county, Va. Upon leaving the army he commenced the practice of law in Smithfield; was a member of the general as-

sembly in 1815-17 and of the house of delegates and state senate for several years. In 1843-49 he was a representative from Virginia to the twenty-eighth, twenty -ninth and thirtieth congresses. He was prosecuting attorney for his county twenty years; was mayor of Smithfield; and a magistrate. He died Jan. 10, 1873, in Isle of Wight county,
Va. Atkinson, Clarence T., lawyer, lecturer, author, was born Dec. 23, 1863, in Columbus, N.J. He graduated from the Columbus seminary and from the Adelphic institute of Bordentown, N.J. He received the nomination as a member of the New Jersey state legislature in 1886,
and
ran ahead of his ticket, but failed to carry enough votes to secure election. He has participated in three presidential campaigns and earned a reputation as an able and eloquent orator. Since 1886 he has steadily refused to accept any public office. He is a noted lawyer of Camden, N.J. and a lecturer well known throughout the east. He has contributed numerous articles to law literature and the periodical press; and many of his productions have been incorporated into standard publications. Atkinson, Edward, manufacturer, inventor, economist, author, was born Feb. 10, 1827, in Brookline, Mass. He was a Boston reformer, active in matters of diet; invented an improved cooking stove calle'd the Aladdin cooker; and president of the Boston manufacturers mutual insurance company. He was the author of The Distribution of Products; Labor and Capital; Industrial Progress of the Nation; The Science of Nutrition; Margin of Profits; Taxation and Work; and Prevention of Loss by Fire. H-e died Dec. 11, 1905, in Boston, Mass.
