Atkinson, George Francis, botanist, author, was born Jan. 26, 1854, in Raisinville, Mich. Since 1896 he has been professor of botany and botanist of the experiment station at Cornell university. He is the author of Biology of Ferns; Elementary Botany; Plant Life; Mushrooms; and other works. Atkinson, George H., clergyman, missionary, was born May 10, 1819, in Newburyport, Mass. In 1848-63 he was home missionary in Oregon; in 1863-73 was pastor of the congregational church in Portland; and was genei'al missionary and superintendent of home missions for Oregon and Washington in 1873-89. He was the author of fourteen pamphlets. He died Feb. 23, 1889, in Portland, Ore.
Atkinson, George Wesley, lawyer, jurist, governor, author, poet, was born June 29, 1845, in Virginia, now West Virginia. In 1870 he graduated from the Ohio Wesleyan university; took a post-graduate course at Mount Union college; studied law two years; took the law course at the Columbian university; he graduated from the law department of the Howard university and was admitted to the bar in 1875. He
has been eminently and was four years United States marshal for West Virginia. In 1889-91 he was a representative from West Virginia to the fifty-first congress. In 1897-1901 he was governor of West Virginia; and for four years was United States district attorney for West Virginia. Since 1905 he has "Been associate justice of the United States court of claims at Washington, D.C. He is the author of seven different books, all of which have been popular and had a large sale. He has the manuscript poems for a good size volume, which will be published later in life. Being a classically educated man, all of his public addresses are of a high order. He has received the degrees of B.A., A.M., Ph.B., Ph.D., LL.B., LL.D. and D.C.L. The latter degree was conferred upsuccessful as a lawyer;
on him by the university of West Virginia, and is the only degree of its grade ever conferred. The only honorary degree ever conferred upon this eminent statesman and jusist was that of Sc.D., which was extended by the United States Grant university and by the university of Nashville; and all of the other degrees he has received from work done by him. Atkinson, Henry, soldier, was born in 1783 in
South Carolina.

captain in 1808; was retained in the army war of 1812; was made adjutantand was finally appointed to the command of the western army. He died in June, 1842, in Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Atkinson, Henry Morrell, capitalist, founder, was born Nov. 13, 1862, in Brookline, Mass. He was educated at Harvard college. Since 1886 he has been a citizen of Atlanta, Ga.; and until 1889 was engaged in the cotton business. He then established the Title guarantee and trust company, of which he is president. He is chairman of the board of directors of the Georgia railway and elecafter the general;

Atkinson, Isaac Edmondson, physician, auwas born Jan. 23, 1846, in Baltimore, Md. He wrote many articles in medical jourthor,
nals relating to dermatology and internal medicine. He was president of the Clinical society of Maryland; president of the Medical and chirurgical faculty of Maryland; and president of the American dermatological association. He died Nov. 24, 1906, in
Baltimore, Md. Atkinson, John, clergyman, author, was bom Sept. 6, 1835, in Deerfield, N.J. In 1852 he was admitted to the ministry in the New Jersey methodist episcopal conference. He was the author of the well-known hymn. We Shall Meet Beyond the River. He was also the author of The Living Way; Memorials of Methodism in New Jersey; The Garden of Sorrows; The Class Leader; and Centennial History of American Methodism. He died Dec. 8, 1897, in Haverstraw, N.Y. Atkinson, Louis E., physician, lawyer, broker, congressman, was born April 16, 1841, in Juniata county, Pa. He was educated in the common f„i,.

He was disabled while in the array; and being unable to practice medicine, studied law ; and has practiced law since 1870. In 1883-93 he was a representative from Pennsylvania in the forty-eighth to the fifty-second congresses. He is president of the Juniata Valley national bank.
