He attained the rank of major for services as a soldier and scout in the Indian and civil wars. He died Dee. 8, 1879, in Alabama. Austin, Archibald, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 11, 1772, in Buckingham county, Va. For over forty years he practiced law in Buckingham county, Va.; and for several years was a representative in the Virginia state legislature. In 1817-19 he was a representative from Virginia to the fifteenth congress as a democrat. He died Oct. 16, 1837, in Buckingham county, Va. Austin, Arthur Williams, lawyer, author, poet, was born in 1807 in Massachusetts. He practiced law in Boston, Mass. He was the author of The Woman and the Queen; and Other Specimens of Verse. He died in 1884 in Boston, Mass. Austin, Benjamin, merchant, statesman, author, was born Nov. 18, 1752, in Boston, Mass. He was a member at different times of both houses of the Massachusetts legislature. He was the author of Constitutional Republicanism, a collection of some of his contributions to the newspapers of his day. He died May 4, 1820, in Boston, Mass. Austin, Charles S., farmer, physician, surgeon, was born Nov. 10, 1862, in Carroll county. Mo. Austin, Coe Finch, botanist, author, was born June 20, 1831, in Finchville, N.Y. For many years he was curator of the herbarium at Columbia college; and was recognized as an authority on mosses. He was the author of Musci Appalachani, a description of American mosses. He died March 18, 1880, in Closter, N.Y. Austin, David, clergyman, author, was born in 1760 in New Haven, Conn. In 17881815 he was apresbyterian minister of Elizabethtown, N.J.; and in 1815-31 was a pastor at Bozrah, Conn. He was author of The American Preacher, by various ministers; The Downfall of Babylon; and several millennial pamphlets and sermons. He died Feb. 5, 1831, in Norwich, Conn.
