Avery, Catherine Hitchcock, educator, founder, author, was born Dec. 13, 1844, in Monroe, Mich. In 1867 she graduated from the state normal school of Framingham, Mass.; and in 1870 married Dr. Elroy M. Avery. She was an instructor in the high and normal schools of Cleveland, Ohio. She was the founder of the Western Reserve chapter of the daughters of the American revolution; was state regent of that organization for Ohio; and vice-president general of the national society. For eight years she was editor of the American Monthly Magazine, the official organ of the daughters of the American revolution. In 1895 she was a member of the school council of Cleveland, being the first woman in Ohio to hold an elective office; and in 1900 was elected a member of the Cleveland city board of school examiners. She is also a member of the city library board of Cleveland, Ohio. Avery, Charles, merchant, manufacturer, philanthropist, was born in 1874 in Westchester county, N.Y. He built an institution for the education and elevation of the negro race in Allegheny City, Pa. He also aided in the building of several methodist churches; and to all of these institutions he bequeathed liberal sums of money. He died in 1855 in Pittsburg, Pa. Avery, Daniel, congressman, was bom in New York. In 1811-17 he was a representative from New York to the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth congresses. His father was killed in the massacre at Fort Griswold, Conn.; and the Deborah Avery chapter of the daughters of the American revolution at Lincoln, Neb., was named for the mother of the congressman. He died Jan. 30, 1842, in Aurora, N.Y. Avery, Edward, lawyer, statesman, was bom March 12, 1828, in Marblehead, Mass. In 1868 and 1876 he was a member of the national democratic conventions. In 1868 he was a member of the Massachusetts state legislature; and was prominent in the public affairs of his state. He died Dec. 29, 1896, in Boston, Mass. Avery, George Whitefield, physician, army surgeon, was born Sept. 27, 1836, in Hartford, Conn. He entered the army as assistant surgeon in the ninth regiment Connecticut volunteers ; and rendered important services at St. James' hospital in New Orleans, La. In 1864 he became surgeon to the New Orleans volunteers; and subsequently rendered great services to New Orleans during the yellow fever and cholera epidemics. In 187193 he practiced his profession in Hartford, Conn. He died Feb. 23, 1893, in Hartford, Conn. ,

For the past twenty-five years he has given most of his time to the preparation of a Popular History of the United States and Its People, now being published in fifteen octavo volumes, with maps and illustrations. He is the author of Avery's Elements of Chemistry; Avery's Elements of Natural Philosophy; The School Physics; Elementary Physics; First Lessons in Physical Science; Complete Chemistry; and School Chemistry. Avery, Henry A., lawyer, jurist, was born Dec. 8, 1847, in Huron county, Ohio. He graduated from the Denison university of Granville, Ohio; and has attained success in the practice of law. He has been county clerk of Hinsdale county. Col.; and for several years was county judge for that county. He has been trustee and attorney for the town of Lake City, Col.; and has served as mayor of his city.
Avery, Henry Ogden, was born Jan. 31, 1852,
designer, architect, in Brooklyn, N.Y. For seven years he studied architecture in Paris, France; and in 1883 became a designer of monuments and mortuary chapels in New York City. His design for the monument Union Prisoners of War, erected in Washington, D.C., has been adopted by the national memorial association. He died April 30, 1890, in New York City. Avery, Isaac Wheeler, lawyer, journalist, author, was bom May 2, 1837, in St. Augustine, Fla. In 1869 he became chief editor of the Atlanta Constitution. He is the author of Digest of the Georgia Supreme Court Reports ; and History of Georgia. He died Sept. 8, 1897, in Atlanta, Ga. Avery, John, physician, surgeon, congressman, was born Feb. 29, 1824, in Watertown,
In 1850 he graduated from Cleveland medical college. He was assistant surgeon and surgeon to the twenty -first Michigan infantry; served in the army of the Cumberland in Kentucky and Tennessee; and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was a member of the state legislature from Montcalm county in 1869-70 was appointed a member of the state board of health in 1880 and reappointed in 1886; and for the last six years was president of the board.
