Backus, Azel, educator, clergyman, college president, was born Oct. 13, 1765, in Norwich, Conn. In 1791 he became the successor to Dr. Bellamy of Bethlehem, Conn.; where he also carried on a successful school. At the foundation of Hamilton college of Clinton, he was chosen its first president. He died Dec. S, 1817, in Clinton, N.Y. Backus, Charles, theologian, author, was born Nov. 9, 1749, in Franklin, Conn. In 1774-1803 he was pastor of the congregational church in Somers, Conn. Here he established a sort of divinity school, receiving theological students into his family. He published a large number of sermons; and a volume on Regeneration. He died Dec. 30, 1803, in Somers, Conn. Backus, Electus, soldier, was in command of the American forces at Sackett's Harbor in 1813; and fell mortally wounded while fighting bravely at the head of his men. He •died June 7, 1813. Backus, Electus, soldier, was born in 1804 in New York. In 1838-40 he served in the Seminole war; and afterward in the Mexican war, being brevetted major in 1846. He became major in the third infantry in 1850; served in the Navajo expedition in 1858; made lieutenant-colonel in 1859 and colonel in the sixth infantry in 1862. He died June 7, 1863, in Detroit, Mich. Backus, Franklin T., lawyer, state senator, was bom May 6, 1813, in Lee, Mass. He was elected prosecuting attorney of his county in 1841; was sent to the Ohio house of representatives in 1846; and to the state senate in 1848. He was a delegate to the peace congress at Washington in 1861. He supported MeClellan for president in 1864; and was a delegate to the national convention that met at Philadelphia in 1866 to form a new party. He died May 14, 1870, in Cleveland, Ohio. attended Phillips Exeter academy; in 1871 graduated with the degree of A.B.
from Harvard college; and in 1893 graduated with the degree of LL. B. from Columbia law school. He held a captaincy in a regiment of New York City public school boys during the war. In 1891 he was chairman of the thirteenth assembly district to the republican county committee of New York City and county; and held the leadership of the district for one year. For ten years he was a delegate to the republican county committee; and has been delegate to half a dozen republican state conventions. In 1893 he concivil

sented to stand for the New York constitutional convention. Since 1873 he has practiced law in New York City; and is a member of the leading legal and scientific associations.

He was the author of History of New England, with Particular Reference to the Baptists. He died Nov. 30, 1806, in Rhode Island.

Bacon, Alice Mabel, educator, journalist, author, was born Feb. 26, 1858, in New Haven, Conn. In 1888-89 she taught in Tokyo, Japan. In 1890 she founded Dixie hospital for training colored nurses. She is the author of Japanese Girls and Women The Japanese Interior; and Lectures on Japanese History.
