Baldwin, James Fairchild, surgeon, author, was born Feb. 12, 1850, in Orangeville, N.Y. Since 1900 he has been surgeon and chief of staff at the Grant hospital of Columbus, Ohio. He is the author of Operative Gynecology; and other medical Monographs. Baldwin, James Fowle, civil engineer, was born April 29, 1782, in Woburn, Mass. He was appointed in 1837 one of the commissioners to examine and report upon the means of supplying Boston with pure water; and recommended Long Pond. His plan was adopted in 1846, and the work was completed in 1848. He was at one time state senator from Suifolk county, and also for some years water commissioner. He died May 20, 1862, in Boston, Mass. Baldwin, James Mark, educator, author, was born Jan. 12, 1861, in Columbia, S.C. Since 1843 he has been professor in Princeton university. Baldwin, Jeduthan, soldier, was born Jan. Woburn, Mass. He commanded

a company during the French and Indian war; and served in the expedition against Crown Point during the autumn of 1775. He served under General St. Clair at Ticonderoga in 1777; and with his regiment was at West Point in 1780. He was a member of the Massachusetts provincial congress in 1774-75. He resigned from the army in 1782. He died June 4, 1788, in Brookfield, Mass. Baldwin, John, congressman, was born in Windham, Conn. In 1825-29 he was a representative from Connecticut to the nineteenth and twentieth congresses. He died in Connecticut.
Baldwin, John Denison, journalist, clergyman, .congressman, author, poet, was born Sept. 28, 1809, in North Stonington, Conn.
He was
editor of the Daily Commonwealth; a writer for the Advertiser; and subsequently became the proprietor of the Worcester Spy. He was a delegate to the Chicago convention of 1860. In 1863-69 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the thirtyeighth, thirty-ninth and fortieth congresses. He was the author of Pre-Historic Nations;
Ancient America; and Raymond Hill and Other Poems. He died July 8, 1883, in Worcester, Mass. Baldwin, Joseph, educator, college president, author, was born Oct. 31, 1827, in New Castle, Pa. For half a century he was engaged in educational work. He was president of the normal schools in Indiana for ten years; president of the Noi-th Missouri state normal school of Kirksville in 1871-81;

dent of the Texas state normal school of Huntsville in 1881-91. He was the author of The Art of School Management; Elementary Psychology; Psychology Applied to the Art of Teaching; and School Management and School Methods. He died Jan. 13, 1899, in Austin, Texas. Baldwin, Joseph Elias, soldier, educator, lawyer, statesman, was born Aug. 22, 1826, in New York City and is the son of the late Rev. Elihu W. Baldwin. He was educated
at Wabash college of Indiana, of which his father was president.
During the civil war he served as a private soldier in the Missouri infantry; and participated in various battles and skirmishes. For many years he was engaged in educational work. In 186465 he served with distinction as a member of the Missouri state senate; and still practices his profession of law in Topeka, Kan., where he has held numerous positions of trust and honor.
