Baldwin, Loamini, soldier, civil engineer, horticulturist, was born Jan. 21, 1745, in Woburn, Mass. During the revolutionary war he entered the service as a major; and became colonel. He was a member of the Massachusetts state legislature in 1778-79, and in 1780. In 1794-1804 he was superintendent of the Middlesex canal, and one of its principal owners. He propagated and disseminated the famous Baldwin apple about 1794. A monument eight feet high marks the site of the original tree which now stands in Wilmington, Mass. He died Oct. 20, 1807, in Woburn, Mass. Baldwin, Loammi, civil engineer, was born May 16, 1780, in Woburn, Mass. The dry docks at Charlestown and at Newport were constructed under his supervision. Since his death a memorial of him, and of his father, has appeared from the pen of a grandson. He died June 30, 1838, in Charlestown, Mass. Baldwin, Mrs. Lydia Wood, litterateur, author, was born in 1836 in Massachusetts. She is the author of Rubina; and A Yankee School-Teacher in Virginia. Baldwin, Mahlon F., educator, physician, uthor, was born Nov. 2, 1856, in Jonesboro, Ind. In 1875-82 he was one of the principals in the city schools of Marion, Ind.; and for eight years served as secretary of the school board of Converse, Ind. He is now a successful physician of Marion, Ind.; and is city councilman for the fifth ward of that city. He published Baldwin's Historical Map of the American Revolutionary War. Baldwin, Mary H., educator, author, was born May 31, 1841, in Crawfordsville, Ind. For many years she taught with success in Glendale and Rutgers female colleges. She is the author of Voice-Placing for Elocution; and Speech and Song. Baldwin, Matthias William, locomotive builder, legislator, was born Dec. 10, 1795. Under the name of M. W. Baldwin and company, he started on a small scale the great works which yet bear his name. In 1832 he designed and constructed the first successful American locomotive, which was named Old Ironsides, which was advertised to depart from Philadelphia daily, when the weather is fair, with a train of passenger cars. In 1835 fourteen engines were produced; the next year forty; and the works now have a capacity of two thousand engines per year. He was a member of the constitutional convention of 1837; and in 1853 was a member of the state legislature. He died Sept. 7, 1866,
first lieutenant; in 1901 became captain in the twenty-sixth regiment United States infantry.

He became president of the Duluth chamber of commerce in 1886. He twice declined congressional nomination. In 1893-95 was a representative from Minnesota to the fifty-third congress as a democrat. He died in 1901 in Duluth, Minn.

In 1848-51 he was United States senator from Connecticut. He died Feb. 10, 1868, in New Haven, Conn. Baldwin, Samuel Prentiss, lawyer, geologist, scientist, was born Oct. 26, 1868, in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1894-99 he practiced law. He has made valuable researches in geology, geography and natural history, especially on the geology of Lake Champlain. Baldwin, Simeon, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Dec. 14, 1761, in Norwich, Conn. In 1803-05 he was a representative from Connecticut to the eighth congress.
