died in Oct. 1, 1806, in Baltimore, Md. Banning, Henry B., soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 10, 1834, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. In 1861 he enlisted as a private soldier; and rose to the rank of brevet major-general. He represented Knox county in the Ohio state legislature in 1866-67. From 1869 he practiced law in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1873-79 he was a representative from Ohio to the forty-third, forty-fourth forty-fifth congresses. He died Dec. 10, 1881, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Bannister, Edward M., painter, artist, was born in 1833 in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. He studied art at the Lowell institute of Boston, Mass.; and spent the greater part of his professional life there. In 1871 he removed to Providence, R.I. He has contributed regularly to the Boston art club exhibitions. His fine picture Under the Oaks was awarded a first-class medal at the centennial exhibition'of 1876. Bannon, Henry Towne, lawyer, congressman, was born June 5, 1867, in Portsmouth, Ohio. He attended the Portsmouth schools; and in 1885-86 attended the Ohio state university. He entered the u,niversity of Michigan in 1886, and graduated therefrom in 1889. He served as prosecuting attorney of Sciota county in 1897-1902. In 1905-09 he was a representative from Ohio to the fiftyninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses. Banta, Theodore M., actuary, genealogist, was born Nov. 33, 1834, in New York City. Since 1858 he has been connected with the New York life insurance company. He is the author of Genealogies of the Sayre and Banta Families. Banvard, John, artist, author, poet, was born about 1820, in New York. His famous panorama of the Mississippi covered three miles of canvas. He was the author of Amasis, the Last of the Pharaohs, afterward dramatized by him; Carrinia, a Drama; Description of the Mississippi River; Pilgrimage to the Holy Land; The Private Tradition of the TemLife of a King; and ple. He died May 26, 1891, in Watertown, S.D. Banvard, Joseph, clergyman, author, was born May 9, 1810, in New York City; and was a brother of John Banvard. He was the author of Romance of American History; Plymouth and the Pilgrims; Novel of the New World, or Adventures and Discoveries of the First Explorers; Tragic Scenes in the History of Maryland; The American Statesman, a Memoir of Webster; Southern Explorers; Soldiers and Patriots of the Revolution; and Priscilla. He died Sept. 28, 1887,

For five years he has been a member of the board of regents of the state normal schools of West Virginia; and also lectures frequently on literary and educational subjects. Barber, Charles Williams, soldier, was born in New Jersey. In 1901 he attained the rank of first lieutenant in the eleventh regiment United States infantry. Barber, Bonn, designer, architect, was born Oct. 19, 1871, in Washington, D.C. Among his more important structures are the National park bank building and Lotos club in New York City; and the Connecticut state library and Travelers' insurance building at Hartford, Conn.
