Bates, James, physician, congressman, was born in Maine. In 1831-33 he was a representative from Maine to the twenty-second congress. He died in Somerset county, Maine. Bates, James W., congressman, was born in Goochland county, Va. In 1819-23 he was a territorial delegate from Arkansas to the sixteenth and seventeenth congresses. He died Jan. 20, 1847, in. Van Buren, Ark. Bates, John Coalter, soldier, was born Aug. 26, 1842, in St. Charles county. Mo. He served through the civil war; was on staff of General Meade from Gettysburg to the close of the civil war; and was brevetted major and lieutenant colonel. For thirty years he was stationed on west Mississippi river, chiefly in the Indian country. He was made brigadier-general of volunteers at the outbreak of the Spanish- American war; and was promoted to major-general of volunteers during the Santiago campaign. In 1901 he became a brigadier-general in the United States army, serving in the Philippines. Bates, John Lewis, lawyer, lieutenant-governor, statesman, was born Sept. 18, 1859, in Easton, Mass. of the Boston common council; in 1894-99 he served as a member of the Massachusetts house of representatives, and was speaker of the house in 1897-99. He became lieutenant-governor of Massachusetts in 1900. He is prominently identified with the public, business and social affairs of his city and state. Bates, John Mallery, educator, clergyman, ornithologist, scientist, was born Jan. 3, 1846, in Wallingford, Conn. Since 1876 he has been a clergyman; and in 1883-86 was chaplain and headmaster of Bethany college at Topeka, Kan. He now fills a pastorate in Eed Cloud, Neb. In 1903 he was president of the Nebraska ornithological union. He has made valuable researches on plant rusts, their life history.
Joseph Clement, lawyer, author, in July 1836, in Richmond, Maine. He is a noted lawyer of San Francisco, Cal. He is the author of Forms and Use of Blanks ; and a paper entitled Horace Howes's Will Case. Bates, Mrs. Josephine W., novelist, author, was born in Chicago, 111. She is the author of Blind Lead; and Bunch Grass Stories. Bates, Joshua, educator, clergyman, college pre.'.ident, author, was born March 30, 1776, in Cohasset, Mass. In 1839-40 he was chaplain in the United States house of representatives; and in 1843 was installed as pastor of the congregational church in Dudley, Mass., which he filled until his death. He was the author of Lectures on Christian Character, a volume of sermons. He died Jan. 14, 1854, in Dudley, Mass. Bates, Joshua, banker philanthropist, was born in 1788 in Weymouth, Mass. He was a prominent banker of Boston, Mass.; and donated fifty thousand dollars toward a library. When the library had become an accomplished fact, he presented the institution with thirty thousand volumes ; and the large hall of the library was called Bates Hall in his honor. He died Sept. 34, 1864, in London, England. Bates, Joshua Hall, soldier, was born in Massachusetts. In 1837 he was second lieutenant in the fourth artillery. In 1861 he was brigadier-general Ohio volunteers. Bates, Katherine Lee, educator, author, poet, was born Aug. 13, 1859, in Falmouth, Mass. She received the degrees of B.A. and M.A. from Wellesley college, in which institution she has been a teacher of English literature since 1886. She is the editor of several volumes in the Student's Series of English Classics; and the author of studies in The English Religious Drama; American Li-
