He served several terms in the Delaware state legislature; and was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1850. In 1858-59 he was United States senator to fill a vacancy. He died Jan. 1, 1869, in Dover, Del. Bates, Morgan, journalist, dramatist, author, was born in 1848 in New York. He was the author of Martin Brook, a novel. He died Jan. 5, 1903, in Traverse City, Mich. Bates, Robert Francis, soldier, was born in New York. He entered the civil war as private in the fifty-third regiment New York volunteer infantry.
