In 1882 he graduated from Harvard university; and has received the degrees of A. M., LL.B. and LL.D. In 1888-92 he practiced law in Boston, Mass. Since 1890 he has been instructor, assistant professor and professor of law in Harvard law school; and in 1903-04 was also professor of law and dean of the law school at the university of Chicago; He is the author of Cases on Criminal Law ; Cases on Damages Cases on Carriers Cases on the Conflict of Laws Cases on Public Service Companies; and Treatises on Criminal Pleading and Procedure and Foreign Corporations. Beale, Mrs. Maria Taylor, artist, author, was born Jan. 30, 1849, in Richmond, Va. She is the author of Jack O'Doon; and The White Horse in the Tree Top. Beale, Richard Lee Turberville, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was bom May 32, 1819, in Hickory Hill, Va. In 1847-49 and 1879-81 he was a representative from Virginia to the thirtieth and forty-sixth congresses as a democrat. He was a member of the convention to form a constitution for Virginia in 1851. He was a member of the state senate of Virginia in 1858-60. He was in the service of the confederate states and became a brigadier-general. He was elected to fill a vacancy in the forty -fifth congress, having previously been elected to the forty-sixth congress. He died April 18, 1893, in Fredericksburg, Va.
Beale, Truxton, traveler, ranch manager, diplomat, was bom March 6, 1856, in San. Francisco, Cal. In 1874 he graduated from the Pennsylvania military college; and in 1878 from Columbia law school of New York City. President Harrison appointed him United States minister to Persia; and later he was appointed United States minister to Greece. He was a member of the anti-Chinese commission. He has traveled extensively in central Asia, Chinese-Turkestan and Siberia. He is now a successful ranch manager in Kern county, Cal. He is a member of the Asiatic society; and has written articles on intenational questions for the North American Review, Forum and Cosmopolitan. Beall, Benjamin Lloyd, soldier, was bom about 1800, in the District of Columbia. In 1837 he was brevetted major for gallantry in the Florida campaign. He took part in the Mexican war; and in 1848 was brevetted lieutenant-colonel for bravery at the battle of Santa Cruz de Royales. In 1861 he was commissioned colonel; and was placed on the retired list in 1862, because of his long and arduous service. He had two sons in the national army and one in the confederate.
