Benedict, Charles Brewster, lawyer, congressman, was born Feb. 7, 1828, in Attica, N.Y. He engaged in the banking business at Attica in 1860. He was a member of the democratic state committee in 1875; and a presidential elector in 1876. In 1877-79 he was a representative from New York to the forty-fifth congress as a democrat. Benedict, Charles L., lawyer, jurist. He practiced law in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and was a representative in the New York state legislature in 1863. In 1865-97 he served as United States district judge for the eastern district of New York; and in 1881-1901 was an associate justice of the court of appeals of New York state. He died in 1901, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Benedict, David, clergyman, author, was Oct. 10, 1779, in Norwalk, Conn. In 1806-30 he was pastor of the First baptist church at Pawtucket, E.I. He was the author of History of the Baptists; History of All Religions ; Fifty Years Among the Baptists Compendium of Ecclesiastical History; and History of the Donatists. He has been priest-in-eharge of St. Paul's cathedral in Marquette, Mich.; and also other parishes. He is now in charge of St. John's church at Sawtelle, Gal; and is noted as a very energetic and successful organizer and

parish worker. He is a writer of much ability; and the author of The Church Catechism Extended; and other works. Benedict, Erastus Cornelius, lawyer, jurist, state senator, author, was born March 19, 1800, in Branford, Conn. He was a jurist of New York City; was a member of the New York state assembly in 1848 and in 1864; and was a state senator in 1872. He was chancellor of the New York state university. He was the author of The American Admirality, Its Jurisdiction and Practice. He died Oct. 22, 1880, in New York City. Benedict, Francis Gano, educator, author, was born Oct. 3, 1870, in Milwaukee, Wis. In 1892-94 he was instructor of chemistry at the Massachusetts college of pharmacy; and since 1896 has been instructor and associate professor of chemistry at the Wesleyan university at Middletown, Conn. Remorse; Madame; and The Shadow-Worshipper and Other Poems. Benedict, George Grenville, soldier, journalist, state senator, author, was born Dec. 10, 1826, in Burlington, Vt. During the civil war he was lieutenant in twelfth regiment Vermont volunteers; and aid-de-camp on the the second Vermont brigade. He has been president of the Vermont and Boston telegraph company; a member of the Verstaff of

state senate; secretary of the university of Vermont; president of the state historical society; president of the Vermont press association; and president of the Vermont society of sons of the American revolution. He was state military historian; collector of customs for Vermont; and for fifty-
four years editor of the Burlington Free Press. He was the author of Vermont at Gettysburg; Vermont in the Civil War; and Army Life in Virginia. He died April 8, 1907, in Camden, S.C. Benedict, George H., engraver, inventor, was born Aug. 12, 1857, in Warsaw, N.Y. Since 1864 he has been a resident of Chicago, III.; studied photo-engraving; and established himself in the engravjng and electrotyping business. He is the inventor of the measuring scale used by all photo-engravers and electrotypers. For ten years he was president of the electrotypers association of Chicago ; and for two years was president of the national association of electrotypers and
