Bemis, Edward Webster, educator, statistician, author, was born April 7, 1860, in Springfield, Mass. He was a professor of economics in the University of Chicago in 1892-95. He is the author of History of Cooperation in the New England States; and Municipal Monopolies. Bemis, George Pickering, journalist, business man, was born March 15, 1838, in Boston, Mass. He is a descendant of Timothy Pickering,

1856; during 1856was clerk and auditor of Stark county, Ind.; and since that time has been engaged in the practice of law. Since 1854 he has taken great interest in politics; was contingent elector for Mr. supported Douglas Lincoln during me civil war of 1861; and in 1878 joined the independent movement for reform; was elector at large in Indiana for Butler; and has held many other prominent offices in his county and state for the furtherance of the movement. In 1896 he was nominated by the Populists as a candidate for congress. He is a member of the Plymouth commandery. Knights Templars. He was honorary curator of the department of zoology in the United States National museum and a captain and brevet major in the United States army. He was the author of Life Histories of North American Birds. He died in 1897.

After the war he settled in New Orleans; and in 1866 he became professor of the theory and practice of medicine in the university of Louisiana. He is the editor of the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal. Benade, Andrew, clergyman, bishop, was born Feb. 30, 1769, in Saxony. In 1833 he was made bishop, with charge of the southem district of Salem, N.C; and four years later was transferred to Bethlehem, Pa. He died in Bethlehem, Pa. Bender, Prosper, physician, author, was bom in 1844 in Quebec, Canada. Since 1883 he has practiced his profession in Boston. He is the author of Old and New Canada and Literary Sheaves.
