is the author of numerous contributions to current literature. Bennet, Benjamin, clergyman, congressman, was born in 1763. He was a baptist minister. In 1815-19 he was a representative from New Jersey to the fourteenth and fifteenth congresses. He died Oct. 8, 1840, in Mirtdletown, N.J. Bennet, Job, Jr., lawyer, jurist. In 186468 and 1873-76 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island. Bennet, Orlando, naval officer, was bom Oct. 4, 1818, in Ithaca, N.Y. During the civil war he was employed by the United States government to clear the harbors of Charleston and Savannah from monitors, torpedoes and other obstructions. By this means a seaway was opened to supply General William T. Sherman's army after its march to the sea. He died July 10, 1880, in Bellport, N.Y. Bennet, Richard, soldier, governor. He was a member of the Virginia coxincil in 1642-46; and was governor of Virginia in 1653-55. He was major-general of the Virginia forces in 1652-73. General Robert E. Lee was one of his descendants. He died in 1685. Bennet, Robert Ames, lawyer, author, was born Feb. 3, 1870, in Denver, Col. In 1893 he was admitted to the Colorado bar. He is the author of Thyra, For the White Christ; and Into the Primitive. Bennet, Thomas, governor, was bom in South Carolina. In 1830-23 he was governor of South Carolina. His administration was marked by an unsuccessful insurrection among the negro population of the state. He died in South Carolina. Bennet, William S., lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 9, 1870, in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was educated in the public schools of his native state; and graduated from Jarvis
academy and from the Albany law school. In 1893 he was admitted to the bar; and was official reporter of the board of supervisors of Orange county, N.Y. In 1901-03 he was a member of the New York state assembly. In 1903 he was justice of the municipal court in New York City. In 1905-11 he was a representative from New York to the fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a republican. Bennett, Alfred Allen, educator, author, was bom Nov. 30, 1850, in Milford, N.H. Since 1885 he has been professor of chemistry at the Iowa state college. In 1897 he was the caucus nominee of the Fusion forces for United States senator in the Oregon leg;

In 1895-98 he was attorney for the United States for the district of Alaska ; and in 1898 was a delegate from Alaska to the International mining congress. In 1901 he was Pan-American commissioner from the state of Washington. He also stands high in religious affairs; and was the first chancellor of the Alaska episcopal church.
Bennett, Caleb P., soldier, governor, was 11, 1758, in Chester county. Pa. He was a major in the Delaware regiment of the revolutionary army; and was engaged at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. He was governor of Delaware in 1833-36. He died July 11, 1836, in Wilming-

Bennett, Caswell, lawyer, jurist, was born Aug. 27, 1836, in Halifax county, Va. In 1857 he began the practice of law in Smithfield, Ky.; and in 1867 was elected circuit judge. In 1886 he became judge of the court of appeals; and in 1893-1900 was chief justice of the supreme court. He died Aug. 9, 1904, in Smithland, Ky. Bennett, Charles Edwin, educator, author, was born April 6, 1858, in Providence, R.I. Since 1893 he has been professor of latin at Cornell university. He is the author of A Latin Grammar; A Latin Composition; The Foundations of Latin; and The Quantitative Reading of Latin Poetry. Bennett, Charles Goodwin, librarian, congressman, was born Dec. 11, 1863, in Brooklyn and has always resided in the old Bennett homestead in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was admitted to the bar; and received the degree of LL.B. from the university of New York. He is chairman of the Broadway branch of the Mechanics bank; and a trustee of Kings county savings institution. He was a member
of the fifty-fourth and fifty-fifth congresses from New York as a republican. Since 1900 he has been secretary of the United States senate.
