Bennett, whose biography appears elsewhere in this work. Bennett, W. Perry, physician, was born in April 8, 1854, in Ohio. He is an eminent physician of Crestline, Ohio. Bennett, William True, soldier, was born in Michigan. He entered the civil war as captain in the first regiment United States infantry. In 1865 he was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers.
Bennett, William W., soldier, business man, was born in 1837 in Orleans county, N. Y. During the civil war he served as a soldier in the union army; in 1861-64 was in the second Michigan battery; in 1864-65 was corporal in the twenty-ninth regiment Michigan volunteer infantry; and participa-
ted in numerous batand skirmishes. For many years he was a successful business man; was in the livery business at Botles

Banning, Henry Lewis, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born April 2, 1814, in Columbia county, Ga. In 1838 he was elected solicitorgeneral of the Chattahoochee circuit; and in 1853 became one of the justices of the supreme court of the state. In 1861 he was appointed colonel in the seventeenth Georgia regiment; and in the following year was promoted to brigadier-general. He died July 10, 1875, in
Columbus, 'Ga.
Benny, Allan, lawyer, legislator, congressman, was born July 12, 1867, in Brooklyn, N. Y. Since 1889 he has practiced law with success in New Jersey; and in 1900-04 was city attorney of Bayonne. In 1897-1900 he was a member of the New Jersey state legislature.

born Aug. 2, 1856, in New York City. When about eight years old he removed with his parents to Lynn, Mass.; and most of his life was passed in that city. He was the author of In the King's Garden and Other Poems; and King Cophetua's Wife, a novel. He died Feb. 3, 1886, in New York City. Bensel, John Anderson, designer, civil engineer, was born Aug. 16, 1863, in New York City. He has had charge of the construction of the bulkhead sea-wall docks on the North river in New York City ; the river wall along Delaware avenue in Philadelphia, Pa.; and has designed various other piers and water front structures for private parties along the Delaware river. In 1898 he was appointed engineer-in-chief of the department of docks
and
ferries in
New York
City.
Benson, Blackwood Ketcham, soldier, educator, author, was born May 12, 1845, in Edgefield district, S.C. He received a thorough education in the public schools. During the civil war he entered the first South Carolina infantry; and served in the ranks until the surrender of Appomattox. He taught school and for many years was general southern agent for the introduction of school books. He is the author of Who Goes There, Friend Story of a Spy in the Civil War; With the Countersign; and Bayard's Courier; Old Squire; and other works.
