For many years he waa auditor of public accounts of Virginia; was a commissioner on behalf of West Virginia to adjust the state debt with Virginia; and was said to be the best auditor of the south. In 1876 he was judge at the centennial exposition. He died in 1818 in Weston, W.Va. Bennett, Joseph, lawyer, state senator, was born May 26, 1840, in Bridgton, Maine. He entered the confederate army as a private in 1861 and rose through the several grades to the colonelcy of the fourteenth North Carolina troops. He was solicitor of Anson county in 1866-67; was a member of the state legislature of North Carolina in 1872; and a delegate to the constitutional convention of the state in 1875. He served through the civil war in the fortieth regiment Wisconsin volunteer infantry; and during his service compiled several popular pieces, which were sung with great enthusiasm by the boys in blue. He was the author of the popular song entitled In the Sweet By and By. He died in 1898 in Richmond, Wis. Bennett, Thomas, soldier, was born in New Jersey. In 1806 he graduated from the United States military academy; and in 1813 attained the rank of captain in the Unites States army. He died Sept. 6, 1818.

He died April 20, 1886, in San Francisco, Cal. Bennett, Richard, lawyer, legislator, jurist, was born Dec. 4, 1851, in Ontario, Canada. For three years he was probate judge of Grand Forks county, N.D.; was alderman of Grand Forks for six years ; and a member of the constitutional convention of North Dakota. He now practices law in Neihart, Mont., where he is also engaged in several business enterprises.

Bennett, Thomas Warren, soldier, state senator, congressman, was born Feb. 16, 1831, in Union county, Ind. He was elected to the Indiana state senate in 1858. He entered the union army in 1861 as a captain; he served in the civil war; and became a brigadiergeneral of volunteers. He was re-elected to the Indiana senate in 1864, serving four years; and was mayor of Richmond in 1869-71. In 1871-75 he was governor of Idaho. In 187577 he was territorial delegate from Idaho to the forty-fourth congress. He died Feb. 2, 1893, in Idaho.
