Biddle, Chapman, soldier, lawyer, was born Jan. 23, 1823, in Philadelphia, Pa. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chaneellorsville; and at Gettysburg had command of a brigade in the first corps. In 1863 he resigned from the array and resumed the practice of his profession. He was connected with the Fairmount park art association; and through his counsel numerous beautiful fountains and ornamental groups were placed in the park. He died Dec. 9, 1880, in Philadelphia, Pa. Biddle, Charles John, soldier, journalist, congressman, author, was born in 1819 in Philadelphia, Pa. In the war with Mexico he was brevetted a major for gallant and meritorious services. In 1861 he was appointed Hill church, N.Y.; in 3879-83

a colonel in the Pennsylvania reserve volunteer corps. In 1861-63 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the thirty-seventh congress to fill a vacancy. When actual hostilities became imminent he entered into projects for defense; and was active in organizing that military anomaly, the Quaker company of volunteers, of which he was elected an officer in 1775, before it joined the army. In 1776 congress authorized the formation of a, flying camp of ten thousand men; and in 1777 elected Colonel Biddle its deputy-quartermaster. After the battle of Trenton, Washington sent him to receive the swords of the Hessian prisoners. He was present at the battles of Princeton, Germantown, Brandy wine and Monmouth; and he also shared in the sufferings of the army at Valley Forge. He died July 14, 1814, in Philadelphia, Pa. Biddle, Clement Cornell, soldier, author, was bom Oct. 24, 1784, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1813 he raised a company of volunteers, the state fencibles; and was elected its captain. He subsequently was colonel of the first regiment Pennsylvania Infantry. At the conclusion of hostilities he devoted himself to the study of political economy; and annotated an edition of Say's treatise on that science. He died Aug. 31, 1855, in Philadelphia, Pa. Biddle, Craig, soldier, author, jurist, was born Jan. 10, 1823, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1875 he has been presiding judge of the court of common pleas of Philadelphia, Pa. He served as a private soldier on the invasion of Pennsylvania by the confederates in 1863. Biddle, David Harmony, soldier, was born in New Jersey. In 1899 he was second lieu-

tenant in the twenty-sixth regiment United States volunteers. In 1900 he was first lieutenant in the Philippine cavalry squadron; and attained the rank of captain. Since 1901 he has been first lieutenant in the sixth cavalry. Biddle,

Edward, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1738 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was an officer in the French war in 175663 became eminent as a lawyer in Reading, Pa.; and was a member of the assembly, and speaker. In 1775-79 he was a delegate to the continental congress; and was one of the prominent advocates of independence. He

died Sept. 5, 1779, in Baltimore, Md. Biddle, Francis, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born Aug. 39, 1839, in Bangor, Maine. In 1865 he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Subsequently he studied law; was admitted to the bar of Maine; and appointed United States judge for the district of eastern Texas, but declined. He died Aug. 31, 1871, in Bangor, Maine.
