ident of the bank of New Amsterdam. He died May 1, 1898, in Saybrook, Conn. Adair, George Washington, capitalist, founder, was born March 1, 1833, in Morgan county, Ga. He was one of the builders of every Atlanta enterprise; promoter of the Atlanta cotton factory; president of the Georgia pacific railroad; and president of the Tallapoosa land company. He died in September, 1899, in Atlanta, Ga. Adair, James, Indian trader, author. He was a trader with the Indians of the southern states; and for forty years in 1735-75 he lived exclusively among them. He was the author of a volume entitled The History of the American Indians. Adair, John, soldier, congressman, governer. United States senator, was born in 1759 in Chester county, S.C. He emigrated to Kentucky in 1787; served as a major in the border warfare of the time; was elected to the Kentucky legislature, serving one year as speaker; in 1799 was a member of the convention which formed the state constitution subsequently held the office of register of the land office in Kentucky; and was United States senator from Kentucky in 1905-06. He commanded the Kentucky troops at the battle of New Orleans under General Jackson; and was appointed a general in the army. In 1820-34 he was governor of Kentucky. In 1831-33 he was a member of the twenty-second congress from Kentucky. He died May 19, 1840, in Harrodsburg, Ky. Adair, John A. M., banker, congressman, was born Dec. 33, 1863, in Portland, Ind. He was educated at the high schools of Portland, Ind. He has been city clerk of Portland, Ind.; and in 1903-03 was a representative in the Indiana state legislature. He is a successful banker; and president of the First national bank of Portland, Ind. In 1907-11 he was a member of the sixtieth and sixtyfirst congressess from Indiana. Adam, Alexander Bruce, merchant, business president, was born July 3, 1839, in Scotland. He began business life as a dry goods clerk; and in 1859 was connected with a dry goods firm of Boston, Mass. In 1864 he entered the Chicago wholesale millinery firm of Keith, Faxon and company, which firm in 1867-84 was known as the 0. K. Keith and company, of which he was a partner from 1870. In 1884 the firm was founded as Edson Keith and company; and since 1897 he has been president of that corporation. Adam, James Noble, merchant, statesman, was born March 1, 1843, in Scotland. In 1881 he founded the firm of J. N. Adam and company, which in a few years became the leading department store of Buffalo, N.Y. and in 1906 retired from active business. In 1895 he was elected to the city council of Buffalo; and since 1905 has been mayor of that city. Adams, Aaron Chester, clergyman, author,
was born
in
1815 in Bangor, Maine.
He
filled
several important pastorates in New England in the congregational church. He was the author of several published Sermons and Monographs. He died about 1900 in Weathersfield,
Conn.
Adams, Mrs. Abigail Smith, wife of President John Adams, author, was born Nov. 33, 1744, in Weymouth, Mass. Her father was the Reverend William Smith, for forty years a congregational clergy m a n of Weymouth. She was the wife of
John Adams, to whom she was married Oct. 35, 1764. She was endowed with President

qualified
to
be
the
companion of her husband; and was also an inspiration to her gifted son. She is known to literature by her entertaining Letters, edited by her grandson. She died Oct. 28, 1818, in Quincy,
Mass.
Adams, Alexander Clinton, insurance, was born April 9, 1847, in Barnstable, Mass. For over thirty-five years he was founder,
engaged in the insurance business in Boston, Mass.; and was an officer and one of the founders of the New England insurance exchange. In 1897 he took charge of the Aetna insurance company of Hartford, Conn. Adams, Alonzo W., soldier, was born ii> New York. He served in the Mexican war; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers for gallant and meritorious services. He died Feb. 32, 1887, in New York. Adams, Alton Dennont, electrical engineer, scientist, was born June 28, 1864, in Biddeford, Maine. Since 1895 he has been a consulting engineer of Worcester, Mass. He has made original researches in the cost of gas
and electrical supply. Adams, Alva, merchant, governor, was born May 14, 1850, in Iowa county. Wis. In 1876 he was a member of the first Colorado state legislature; and was governor of that state in 1887-89 and 1897-99. He has also attained success as a hardware merchant of Pueblo, Col. Adams, Alvin, founder of the Adams express company, was born June 16, 1804-, in Andover, Vt. In 1840 Alvin Adams engaged in the then novel specialty of forwarding parcels, money and valuable merchandise between Boston and New York by way of Worcester, Norwich and New London, beginning in a little store in Boston. Later he formed the partnership of Adams and cj)mpany, with Ephraim Farnsworth, the latter taking charge of the New York office, and being succeeded at his death soon afterward by William B'. Dinsmore. In 1854 Mr. Adams effected a union of four concerns under the
