City. Blaine, Harry Gordon, physician, educator, author, was born Nov. 35, 1858, in Wheeling,
W.Va. In 1884 he founded the American Medical Compend, of which he was editor and owner for the ten succeeding years. In 188592 he was professor of diseases of the mind and nervous system in the Toledo medical college. He is the author of The Physician, his Relation to the Law; A Manual on Venereal Diseases; Blaine's Medical Footprints; and other works. Blaine, James Gillespie, statesman, author, was born Jan. 31, 1830, in Washington county. Pa. He graduated at Washington college in 1847; adopted the profession of an edit-
removed to Maine; and edited the Kennebec Journal and Portor;
land Advertiser for several years. He served four years in the Maine legislature, two years as speaker of the house. In 1863-1876 he was a representative from Maine to the thirty-eighth to the forty-fourth congresses, serving as a member of the committee on post offices and post roads. He served on the committee on military affairs, the special committee on the death of President Lincoln, and as chairman of the committee on the war debts of the loyal state. In 1869-75 he was speaker of the house to the forty-first, forty-second and forty-third congresses; and in 1876-81 he was United States senator. In 1881 and in 1889-92 he was secretary of state. He was an unsuccessful candidate for president of the United States in 1884. He was the author of Twenty Years of Congress. He died Jan. 27, 1893, in Washington, D.C. Blaine, Walker, diplomat. In 1881 he was appointed from Maine as third assistant secretary of state. The same year he was sent, in conjunction with W. H. Triscott, as a special envoy to Peru and Chili. He died about
1896 in Maine. Blair, Andrew Alexander, chemist, author, was born Sept. 20, 1848, in Woodford county,
Ky. He
is a chemist of Philadelphia, Pa. He the author of The Chemical Analysis of Iron; and Methods in Analysis of Iron, Steel, Copper, and Alloys of Copper, Zinc and Tin. Blair, Austin, lawyer, state senator, congressman, governor, was born Feb. 8, 1818, in Caroline, N.Y. He was elected to the Michigan state legislature; and afterward to the senate of the state. He was the twelfth governor of Michigan in 1861-65; and was known as the war governor. In 1867-73 he was a representative from Michigan to the fortieth, forty-first and forty-second congresses. He died Aug. 6, 1894, in Jackson, Mich.

Blair, Barnard, congressman, was born in Salem, N.Y. In 1841-43 he was a representative from New York to the twenty-seventh congress. He died May 1, 1880, in Salem, N.Y. Blair, Charles A., lawyer, jurist, was born April 10, 1854, in Jackson, Mich. In 1878 he began the practice of law in Jackson, Mich. Since 1904 he has been an associate justice of the state supreme court of Michigan. Blair, Charles H., lawyer, statesman, author, was born July 5, 1851, in Zanesville, Ohio. He was educated at Kenyon college ; and graduated from Cornell university with the degrees of A.B. and A.M. In.1876-82 he practiced law in Ithaca, N.Y.; and since 1882 has practiced law in New York City. In 1892-1900 he was president of the Ithaca calendar clock company; and since 1905 has been president of the Hanover land and dock company. He has been captain and colonel in the New York national guard. In 1890 he was the republican candidate for congress from the twelfth district of New York City. He was one of the founders of the Ohio society of New York. He is the author of The National Railway Act; and Report on the Proposed Park System for the Borough of Rich-
