He founded colleges at Vancouver and Walla Walla, Wash.; and erected twenty-four churches. He was the first catholic bishop of Nesqually. He died Feb. 25, 1887, in Washington. Japanese People; Buddhism in Japan; and the Object of Educational Work of Missions in Japan. Blanchet, Francis Herbert, clergyman, archbishop, founder, was born in 1795 in Canada. In 1819 he was ordained to the ministry. In 1850-80 was a catholic archbishop in Oregon. He founded a number of missions; converted the Indians; and built eleven churches. He died June 18, 1883, in Portland, Ore. Blanchet, John Baptiste, clergyman, composer, author, was born June 23, 1856, in St.

Anne, HI. In 1882 he graduated from Hobart college with the degrees of A.B. and A.M.; and graduated from the general theological seminary of Xew York City. In 1885 he became a deacon; the same year became priest of the protestant episcopal church; and curate of the Saint Peter and Paul church at Chicago, 111. Since then he has been rector of various churches in the diocese of New York.

Kentucky. He died in Kentucky. Bland, Charles Clelland, soldier, jurist, was bom Feb. 3, 1837, in Hartford, Ky. During the civil war he was captain of company D, Missouri infantry volunteers. In 1881-96 he was judge of the circuit court of the nineteenth judicial circuit of Missouri; and was then elected one of the judges of St. Louis court of appeals, which position he still holds. Bland, Richard, congressman, author, was born May 6, 1710, in Virginia. He was for some years a leading member of the house of 23 district of

burgesses; and in 1768 was one of the committee appointed to remonstrate with parliament on the subject of taxation. In 1773 he was one of the committee of correspondence. In 1774-76 he was a delegate to the continental congress. He published Letter to the Clergy on the Two-penny Act; and an Inquiry into the Rights of the British Colonies. He died Oct. 28, 1776, at Williamsburg, Va. Bland, Richard Parks, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 19, 1835, in Hartford, Conn. In 1865 he located in Rolla, Mo.; and practiced law with his brother until he removed to Lebanon in 1869. In 1873-95 and 1897-1901 he was a representative from Missouri to the forty-third, forty-fourth, fortyfifth, forty-sixth, forty-seventh, forty-eighth, forty-ninth, fiftieth, fifty-first, fifty-second, fifty-third, fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth congresses as a republican. near Lebanon, Mo. Bland, Robert Linn, journalist, lawyer, author, was born June 2, 1868, in Jane Lew, W. Va. He has been vice-president of the West Virginia editorial association. He is the author of Mountain Memoirs, a local work of biographies. Bland, Theodoric, soldier, congressman, was born in 1742 in Prince George county, Va. He rose to the rank of colonel; and had the command of a regiment of dragoons. In 1779 he had command of the troops at Albemarle barracks. In 1780-83 he was a representative from Virginia to the continental congress. He was then chosen a member of the Virginia legislature. In 1789-91 he was a representative to the first congress, having voted for its adoption. He died June 1, 1790,

He was judge of the county court in Baltimore; judge of the United States district court of Maryland; and for twenty-two years was chancellor of the state.
